Eco 1000

Eco 1000 takes inspiration from the Bathurst 1000 car races. As a landmark event for Bathurst, it shapes the identity of locals and more recently is involved in conversation that exposes a problematic relationship with the environment, gambling, drinking culture, sexism culture and Aboriginal people.

I would like to propose an alternative Bathurst 1000 event where people could gather to present a creative task of doing 1000 laps (of something) or circles in 15 minutes. The most creative act would win.

I will aim to complete 1000 circles in fifteen minutes. I have used this as a frame to translate the physical and mental journey of the drivers, question the role of grid girls, the epic-ness of winning and practice making more environmentally conscious choices.

Eco 1000 was commissioned by Artstate Bathurst in 2018 as a part of the program THREE. It brings together three women from the Central West to present work together for the first time. Alison Plevey, Rosslyn Wythes and Tanya Brown share many things in common such as eisteddfods, paddocks, goat’s cheese and a shared desire to explore the world beyond their respective country towns; Bathurst, Orange and Greenethorpe.

Together they demonstrate a linage of learning, having all studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. But they also display the diversity of career paths available to dancers and makers who embrace working in the Contemporary Arts today. It has been a wonderful experience personally to work together in the studio and The Mill. We are excited to bring our stories to you

This project has been supported by the Dance Makers Collective, Create NSW’s Making Spaces Programs, Regional Arts NSW, Artstate Bathurst and Adam Deusien.

Sound composed by James Hogan and Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
