Weaving Line is a painting exhibition by contemporary dancer, choreographer and visual artist Rosslyn Wythes. These paintings continue the translation of choreographic and movement ideas to the page. She explores the way line, colour and texture can confuse our understanding of depth and perspective. These images capture the memory of a movement and trace the pathway of an arm or the silhouette of a body in space. They echo thoughts from her current body of choreographic research – A Reflection on Canon.

A collaboration with Investigations Géométrique has provided bespoke frames for each painting. Investigations Géométriques is a cabinet and joinery-making workshop based in Brussels. It specialises in ecodesign by using locally sourced and recycled materials. Traditional joinery techniques and natural finishes have been used to make the frames both functional and aesthetic holding, supporting and protecting the artwork for many years to come.

This collaboration was developed through the Artist Commons, the grassroots organisation of Brussels based artists. This working relationship spans many years which has made it possible to approach Weaving Line with trust, shared curiosity and a respect for one another’s creative dynamic. There is a conversation between the frame and painting, the frame influences the image and visa versa. This collaboration seeks to capture and extend the play between image and background, like the scenography of a dance performance. We both trust that the complete artistic work is held between both frame and painting.

Meticulous documentation and photography has been done by Michiel Stegen.

This project was made possible by the support of GC De Maalbeek, GC Den Dam, GC Op Weule and the Culturele Activiteitenpremie funding by Vlaanderen Departement Cultuur, Jeugd en Media
